New Year, New Project, New Door?

January 26th 2017

Home renovations can be a daunting task.  You might feel that you lack the time or the energy during this cold miserable January.  But we’re here to get you started with some top tips for enhancing your home in 2017!

Make an Entrance!

You never get a second chance to make a first impression and the front of your home speaks volumes. It tells a visitor all about the owner and creates expectations about what lies within.  So what better place to begin a home improvement project than here?

Survey the Area

Before you decide to do anything, take a moment to review the door that you have.  If it’s made from UPVC then the most you probably do is to give it a good wash down with warm soapy water.  However, if you have a timber door then you might be able to freshen it up with a lick of paint.

Introduce Some Colour

A great way to add a little bit of your personality!  Whether you’re adding a lick of paint to your existing door or buying a shiny new composite door, a splash of colour will give the front of your home an instant & refreshing facelift.

Experts are predicting that bold, confident, jewel tones are going to be BIG for home décor in 2017 with greens, blues, and yellows leading the way.

A note of caution though.  You might think that a beautiful sunshine yellow door is right up your street, but you need to consider how bold colours work when set against your brickwork or rendering.

Flower Power

Hanging baskets, window boxes and climbers are other great ways to inject some colour to your entranceway.  And they won’t break the bank!

Ornate planters on either side of the door look classy and introduce a couple of bright accents of colour that will complement the shade of your door.

Furniture Shopping

We humans are tactile creatures and not only do old door knobs and knockers look shabby, when they are worn they can feel poor to the touch as well.  And it’s so easy to replace them with something more stylish!

A chrome finish bar handle adds instant modernity. Or if you fancy something a little more traditional, why not go for some lovely pewter handles and matching letter plate? A recent trend is to overlay contrasting textures, such as a satin finish against a rustic wood grain.  There truly are a vast array of options!

A De-Lightful Home

Illuminate your entrance

It’s a good idea to light up your entranceway as you’ll want to be able to find your keys on the dark nights!  Aside from the practicalities of good lighting it can create a welcoming atmosphere and your guest will feel instantly cosy and at home.

Get creative here…. Hide lighting within the trees or shrubs to create an internal glow.

Solar lighting along the pathway will draw attention to your newly fashioned front door.  Some string lighting on the porch area and a lantern by the side of the door will add a warming feeling to your entrance.

By following these simple tips you’ll be well on your way to creating an entrance with the WOW factor.

Next week we’ll look at what your should do if you feel your current door is past its peak.
